Starting the Discussion
As an individual project resulting from my participation at the Faculty Resource Network held at the NYU campus during the summer of 2009 I am beginning to outline a blog for teacher candidates participants in EDU 206: Foundations of Education. The course is taught in the spring so I have some time to dable with, receive feedback, and continue researching the way in which all learners can participate in exploring a more indepth look at the history of Indian boarding schools.
The purpose of selecting this particular activity stems from the use of one of our textbooks for the course - They Called It Prairie Light: The Story of Chilocco Indian School. Authored by: K. Tsianina Lomawaima. The case study focuses on the experiences of Native American youth as they attempt to assimilate at an Oklahoma boarding school between the periods of the 1920s -30s.
Many of the teacher candidates in past teachings have shared boarding school stories passed down to them from grandparents and other family members. Other students have no stories to tell.
My attempt is to give these stories "presence" and encourage all students to reach out to the Internet and weave the stories shared within this blog. I also anticipate with further exploration (by me) that pictures, videos, and podcasting will be making their presence known on the blog as well.
